Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon has called for Arsene Wenger to strip William Gallas of the captaincy.
Two games into the new Premier League season and Arsenal have so far looked unconvincing, winning 1-0 at home to West Bron before losing by the same scoreline against Fulham at Craven Cottage last Saturday.
In subsequent post-match interviews, Wenger blamed Gallas for Fulham's winner, but nobody could deny that the hosts were worthy winners, having outplayed their more illustrious London neighbours for much of the 90 minutes.
The goal came with 21 minutes played. From a corner, Jimmy Bullard arced his cross in and Brede Hangeland, the 6ft 5in Norwegian captain, rushed across the box and pushed the ball into the net with the sole of his boot. It was his first goal for the club.
Afterwards Wenger said: “It was the kind of game where you could not afford to make a mistake, and a massive one.
“You had to get into half-time at 0-0 and then win it. That’s the biggest regret I have. If you are focused you should stop them scoring at that level (knee-high) in the middle of the goal.”
Dixon, who played more than 600 games for Arsenal in 14 years at the club, watched the match in total disbelief at Gallas' half-hearted efforts, and believes it is time for a change in leadership.
He said: "It was the worst performance I've seen from an Arsenal team in a long time.
"Tony Adams was sitting just behind me and I said to him, 'Where's the leadership?'
"I blame the captain for that. I reckon Gallas is to blame. He's not leading that team."
