Micah Richards is out of Manchester City's crucial Uefa Cup clash against Midtjylland in order to undergo further monitoring following the head injury he sustained during the Premier League victory against West Ham.
City manager Mark Hughes had been prepared to give the England international extra time to prove his fitness for Thursday's second leg in Denmark after tests ruled out a neck injury following Richards' collision with team-mate Tal Ben Haim.
But with captain Richard Dunne available again after missing the West Ham win through suspension, Hughes has now ruled Richards out for the return with City trailing 1-0 from the first leg.
The 11-times capped England defender is continuing to recover and although, unlike rugby union, there is no rule in football to prevent players from returning following concussion, City are reluctant to risk him.
Hughes remains keen to add to his squad before the transfer window closes on Aug 31, with Wigan forward Henri Camara and Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips on his wanted list.
Hughes said: "You saw one purchase against West Ham in Vincent Kompany that cost a significant amount and we'll be back in the market trying to sign good players."
