Manchester United’s manager Alex Ferguson continued playing tricks, hinting again that he would not sign Tottenham Hotspur Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov. Irish broadcaster Setanta quoted Ferguson as saying that United were good enough to win the Premier League without signing any new players.
Ferguson was expected to seal Berbatov's transfer as soon as Spurs found a replacement for him, “now believed to be Roman Pavlyuchenko, although Andrei Arshavin remains an option,” Setanta said.
United’s lack of firepower in their 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle in the season-opening match on August 17, was widely commented in media. The team played without injured winger Cristiano Ronaldo, midfielder Nani and striker Carlos Tevez, and media reports suggested that United would be forced to sign Berbatov. Ferguson, however, insisted his team "can retain the title with or without new signings.”
“If a new signing happens it happens,” he was quoted as saying to internet radio Key 103. “The squad we had last season is good enough. Carlos Tevez will be back for the Portsmouth game next week. Anderson is due back from the Olympics by the time we play Liverpool and Chelsea and Wayne Rooney will be more effective for playing 90 minutes against Newcastle […] If we have to go with what we have, we will do.”
According to The Times transfer gossip column on August 19, however, Berbatov met his agent Emil Danchev in Sofia the previous day to try to force through his move from Spurs to United. Berbatov is in Bulgaria preparing for the national team’s friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina on August 20.
Ths striker was “worried that United will try to sign Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the Holland striker, from Ajax if Tottenham refuse to lower their £30 million asking price,” The Times said.
“We’re entering a crucial period of negotiations,” the newspaper quoted Danchev as saying.
