A moment of Deco magic enough for Chelsea to beat resilient Wigan

Wigan Athletic (0) 0 Chelsea (1) 1

Portuguese international Deco shone for his new club for the second Premier League match in a row as his early free-kick proved the difference between Chelsea and a dogged Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium.

Deco lashed home a stunning strike from 30 yards in the third minute of a first-half that promised much.

Both sides were committed to going forward and Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal was as busy as his opposite number as chances came and went for both sides.

Mike Pollitt was called in to the Wigan goal after Chris Kirkland injured his back in the pre-match warm-up but was powerless to keep out Deco's curling effort.

The second period, in contrast, was a disappointment as the home time appeared to run out of energy and ideas whilst Chelsea settled for protecting their lead and emerged as deserved winners.

Chelsea themselves were a shadow of the team that romped to a 4-0 victory over Portsmouth in last weekend's opener, but with two wins from two the Luiz Felipe Scolari has already stolen a march on title rivals Arsenal and Manchester United.
